All these chairs are ultra-lightweight as you would expect from an item built to be carried on the trail, the lightest in the list is only 1.1 lb (500 grams) of weight. They are also exceptionally packable and usually come with a carry bag with some loops so that you can attach it to the backpack.
No need to buy a new backpack for such a purpose. Many packs have bottom straps where you can attach such a packed chair. If it is without bottom straps, you can carry it in the side stretch pocket and fix in place with side compression straps. Some packs have attachment loops on the top so here you can fix the packed chair with a pair of cords. You can also attach it on the front of the pack if you have any attachment loops or daisy chains.
You can transport such a chair also on a mountain bike or on a beach cruiser bike. They will fit in an inflatable kayak as well, they are so small when packed. The packed size can be as small as (L x D) 14 x 4 inches (35 x 10 cm) so imagine.
In some cases, the carry bag of such a backpacking chair is designed to be attached to the chair when it is in use, and it becomes a storage pouch so you do not have to keep some small items on the ground. About the construction of backpacking chairs
These are very simple structures that normally only have the following elements:
- A frame which includes several segments of shock-corded poles. This is convenient because you cannot lose any element of the structure and you can have the frame ready in seconds and this can be done without any light.
- The fabric sling which you put on the frame by attaching it to the ends of back poles and seat poles. So normally it has only four points where it is in contact with the frame. These points are with reinforced fabric and with tiny pockets where the ends of frame poles enter and stay in place. You will see this in the video below.
- Of course, you also have a carry bag.
Some examples in the list have a high back and even a headrest. This adds lots of comfort of course, but bear in mind that this implies longer poles on the back and more fabric in general, so these chairs are a bit heavier than others.
The legs are usually with some plastic cups for protection and to give some traction and reduce sinking in the ground. But in general, the feet will sink if you use such a chair on a soft ground. The hub elements where the legs join the upper frame is normally a hard nylon or anything similar.
