If you want to know how to deal with rats in the garden and around your house, read here about my own experience. I have started my fight against rats and I shall report here how it develops.
Perhaps you have read in my another text about my struggle with a mole in the garden? This is a lost battle, there is no way to get rid of it. It is still around, though a bit quieter in these warm months.
But now we realized we had a rat or perhaps more of them in the garden. See below some of the holes under the wall in the garden, they use them as highways around the house.
I have even seen it a few times, once during the day and several times in the evening. It seems that they are damaging some vegetables that we grow next to the house. But even if this is not so, my wife would not eat the vegetables knowing that ruts are going around.
So this is why I realized I had to deal with this. I have already tried with a pack of granules against rats. I positioned them at some critical places, and I was glad to realize that the granules disappeared. I thought that rats have eaten them and that we would not see them again. But I was wrong.
The top picture above shows my next set of items I bought to deal with rats. My strategy is as follows:
- I shall use a combination of several means and tools. This should increase my chances to get rid of the rats. These are clever creatures and if they see the same thing at several places they might become cautious and avoid them.
- I plan to position them at several different places. This will be in particular at some narrow passages which they clearly use. You have seen a couple of them in the picture above.
- I plan to change their places so that rats do not get used to them.
- There will be several physical traps. So the question is what to use in the traps to attract rats. My guess is this should be easier than in my mentioned fruitless battle against the mole. I shall try to experiment a bit and use some food that smells good and that looks tasty.
- Note, I am in no way an expert in this, I am just trying to find a way to solve the problem. If you have already been through this, I am open to any suggestions.
Hopefully, I shall be able to report about my success. So bookmark this text and come again. I shall be adding a few lines later. I might even be able to show my trophy rat in one of the traps. Wish me luck.
Addition one day later: So after just one night, one of the simple pedal rat traps worked and we had a rat killed. The scene did not really look pleasant, its head was practically smashed, so I am reluctant of adding it here. It worked as I was hoping it would. This was the trap that I positioned close to the underground passage shown in one of the pictures above.
I doubt this is the only rat around, so the traps remain in place. If it happens that we catch one alive, you will see the picture here.
I bought the tools in our nearby local store. But I was also checking to see what was available on Amazon. Below are some of the products against ruts that look promising to me.
