How to choose a pair of men’s snowboarding pants
You might want to consider a few things before deciding about your pants and making your purchase.
3-in-1 Feature: It is convenient to have a base layer and an outer layer, so you can use them together or zipped apart. The inner is an insulation layer so you can use it when necessary.
The insulation is usually expressed in grams, and this can be either total weight or the weight per square meter of material. In some cases, you can have just a thin fleece layer and this can be enough.
The shell layer keeps the inner layer and you protected from the snow. It is essential that the shell is not only waterproof but also highly breathable. The waterproofness is normally expressed in mm and if you have 5000 mm this should work great, but you can have much more than that, anywhere in the range 10000-20000 mm. Nowadays, it is much easier to make a piece of fabric waterproof than highly breathable.
Insulated snowboarding pants: In this case, the insulation is there but it is not removable. The external layer (shell) features are supposed to be the same as in the 3-in-1 pants mentioned above.
Softshell snowboarding pants: As you can imagine, in this case you have very breathable and comfortable pants suitable for mild weather conditions. They offer wind protection but no water protection.
Durability: It is best to go for nylon, preferably with Cordura added on more exposed areas to prevent tearing or abrasion, like the knees areas. Polyester is a cheaper option, but polyester tends to absorb a bit of water.
Zips and vents: With such features, your pants will perform well for both cool and warm weather situations, and you can always adjust to the current situation.
Boot gaiters: These are elastic cuffs at the bottom of each leg. They should stretch over your boots and keep the snow from sliding up.
