When we recently moved into our new home I knew instantly I shall need some telescopic ladders for some works in the house. To realize why this is so, it is enough to see the top picture above. We have a space with stairs with wooden walls that are up to 6 meters high, and there is a gallery above.
So I ordered the ladders shown in the picture, as you realize these are A-frame telescopic ladders suitable for various jobs in and around the house. I needed this particular type because they are freestanding. The reason is that sometimes you do not want to place the ladders against the walls to avoid damages on the wall, or simply you have to do some repairs where you need a freestanding model.
In my case, there is a large lamp partially visible in the picture above, it was dusty so I needed high but freestanding ladders because some parts of the lamp I could not clean with the ladders positioned against the wall.
This particular model is around 2.2 meters high when in the A-shape shown in the picture left. But they are cleverly designed, there is a mechanism which allows you to make them straight and the effective length becomes around 4.4 meters. In the picture above (on the right) you can see them fully extended in one half only, but partially extended in the other half. This is convenient because you can extend them to do work at various heights on the wall.
I am going to order one more, this time I shall go for a longer but non-freestanding model that extends up to 7-8 meters. I need this for some works outside. There is a tree that I have to cut, it is in a delicate position and I shall start from the top and cut part by part, so having such a straight and long ladder will help. Wish me luck.
How telescopic ladders work
I was in a rush when I ordered my telescopic ladders, but I still read a bit about them and watched some YouTube videos to see how they work. In our local shop, they have several of them on display and I was able to look around and see their features. I am far from being a professional in this, but I am using the ladder and this will continue because there is lots of work to do around the house. This is why I can share some first-hand experience.
The model which I have can be extended from the top or from the bottom. This means the following.
- You position the ladder in its A-shape and it is around 1 meter high, see the picture below. Now you can extend sections between the rungs by starting from the top, and in this case, they will extend the ladder to its full A-frame length.
- But if you start by extending the sections from the bottom, you can extend them to any length from the lowest to the highest. You will always have a stable A-frame freestanding ladder with various heights. This is how it is with my ladder, as far as I see many of them are with a similar design. The picture below shows it extended from the bottom for one section only.
- But if you want to use the ladder without the A-frame, you release the mechanism in the middle (this is the section which is normally on the top of the A-frame), and you will have a straight short ladder, see the picture below.
- Now you start extending sections from any of the two halves. Note that each half can be extended from its two ends as described above for the A-frame. So you can have a variety of lengths and this is very useful.
Each rung (the bar where you place your feet) has its own pair of release buttons. I know, there are better-designed ladders on the market with only one pair of buttons, and you will see some in the list below, but I am described what I have. Each section between two rungs has its self-locking mechanism so this all goes smooth.
When you finish the job and want to fold and collapse the ladder, there is a pair of red buttons close to the bottom (on each of the two halves). So you press them simultaneously and you will see the sections collapsing and you will hear the air getting out of the tubes. This air prevents the sections from collapsing instantly.
There is some gap between the tubes through which the air goes out, but this same gap makes the ladder a bit shaky. But no worry, they are stable and the tubes are really thick and they look strong. Nevertheless, if you have problems with vertigo you might feel uneasy on such a structure, but this would be with any ladder, wouldn’t it. We have a family member who would not dare to step more than several sections on any ladder no matter how strong it may look.
When you have done the job, you fold the ladder and there is a strap that you can fix around it to keep it folded, see the picture below. The ladder is quite heavy, but those tubes are thick so this is normal. When folded the ladder does not take much space. I shall keep it in a small shade behind the house, but as I said above, I have quite a lot of work to do and the ladder is going to be inside the house for a while.
From what I have seen so far, all of them are aluminum constructions, and they come with one or with two stabilizer bars that you attach at the bottom. I do not think this is a tool for professionals, but I can fully recommend this type of ladders for simple house repairs. I need them a lot and no doubt you will need such a tool if/when you move into a new house.
